Flamenco is a sophisticated, colorful, and complex musical and dance culture with roots in the southern part of Spain known as Andalusia. A dynamic and creative force, Flamenco has evolved over the years to integrate a variety of new musical and dance elements, influences, and instrumentation. It has also spread throughout the world as singers, dancers, and guitarists from Spain and all corners of the globe have come to embrace, adapt, and transform its ancient traditions and forms.
The Val Ramos Flamenco Ensemble lives up to the finest traditions of Flamenco. Its repertoire and performances capture the essence of this musical culture and yet add new expression in keeping with its dynamic nature. The ensemble performs as both an instrumental group as well as in conjunction with traditional “cuadro Flamenco” artists that include a singer, dancers, guitarists, and a percussionist. Traditional dance costumes and Flamenco “cante” (song) textures meet modern harmonies and instrumentation for a colorful and most enjoyable musical and dance experience.
The group performs in a variety of concert formats including solo and duet guitar recitals; instrumental trio and quartet with guitars, percussion, and singer; full instrumental ensemble featuring guitars, flute, bass, violin, and percussion (sometimes also with a singer); and traditional “cuadro Flamenco” featuring a singer, guitarists, dancers, and a percussionist. It performs at music festivals, concert series, colleges and universities, libraries and museums, cultural and heritage celebrations, schools, corporate events, country clubs, and private functions. Fees range from $700 to $2000 depending on concert format and travel requirements.
Non-profit Connecticut presenters that want to book the Val Ramos Flamenco Ensemble can apply to the Connecticut Department of Economic Development’s Office of the Arts for various arts program funding by going to: https://portal.ct.gov/DECD/Content/Arts-and-Culture/Funding_Opportunities/ARTE-accesible-Grant. Arts and cultural performance presenters that serve diverse audiences may apply for the “ARTE-acesible” Grants program for grants ranging from $500 up to $3,000 by going to the website for more information.
Fee support to book the Val Ramos Flamenco Ensemble may be available to New England nonprofit organizations through the New England States Touring (NEST) program of the New England Foundation for the Arts. Visit https://www.nefa.org/NEST for more information. NEST Grants provide up to 60% of the artist fee and range from $500 to a maximum of $5,000 for NEST 1 and 2 grants, and up to $10,000 for NEST 3 grants.
